Whether you’re chatting online or planning to meet in person, please follow these important safety guidelines.
Online Safety Tips
1. Protect Your Personal Information
Avoid sharing sensitive details like your home address, workplace, financial information, or passwords.
Be cautious about sharing social media profiles too quickly.
Use the platform’s messaging system until you feel comfortable.
2. Watch for Red Flags
Be cautious if someone:
Avoids video calls or meeting in person.
Professes strong feelings very quickly.
Asks for money, gift cards, or financial assistance.
Has inconsistent stories or limited photos.
If something feels off, trust your instincts.
Never Send Money or Financial Information
Romance scams are common online. Never send money, cryptocurrency, gift cards, or bank details to someone you’ve only met online — no matter how convincing their story may seem.
When accessing your account from a public or shared computer, be aware of your surroundings so that others are not able to view or record your password or other personal information.
IMPORTANT: We never send emails, SMS, or any other notifications asking for your username and password information. If you have fallen victim to a scam, make sure you report it by contacting us.
Meeting in person
- Get to know the other person before meeting in person: never agree to meet someone just after the first few messages.
- Meet for the first few times in populated public places, and avoid moving to a private location.
- Tell a friend or family member of your plans, including when and where you’re going to meet a new person. Have your cell phone charged and with you at all times.
- If something looks suspicious during the meeting — feel free to end it under any pretext.
